Transferring confidence on the pitch to confidence off it

Peter, at 14 was passionate about football and darts, but faced significant challenges as he had been out of school for over six months. From the outset, it was clear that Peter’s enthusiasm for sports could be harnessed to help him rebuild confidence and manage his anxiety. We worked with him through football games at the park to build a relationship. Peter shared how much he missed school and being with his friends, leading to a gradual reintegration plan. Initial obstacles included overcoming his reluctance to leave the house and addressing sleep difficulties, as Peter often stayed awake until 4 a.m. Key activities like the crossbar challenge combined play with discussions about confidence and anxiety, helped Peter relate these concepts to both sport and everyday life.

Peter’s natural talent on the pitch highlighted his capacity for confidence in comfortable, familiar settings. Support centered on anxiety management and nurturing a positive outlook toward school, reinforced by techniques discussed during sports activities. These sessions prompted Peter to gain new insights, once remarking, “that’s something I’ve never thought of before.” His progress was marked by his growing willingness to attend future sessions at school, an important step towards re-engagement with education.

We successfully met Peter’s needs by blending structured support with his love of sport, making him feel listened to and valued. Peter’s confidence was built through the laying the foundation for sustained support and successful reintegration into school life.
