Providing support for young people and their families

My Journey from unemployed: Finding my Path Again

I had completed University about 2 years before beginning the King’s Trust course, doing a degree in Creative Writing. I tried out teaching but that didn’t work out, leaving me with no idea of what I wanted to do for a job. I also tried out Au Pairing but that was not a viable career option for the long term. I had tried for over 2 months to find employment but had no luck and needed both support in finding a job and something to do to fill up my days.

At the beginning of the programme, I was more introverted than I am now. I was reluctant to engage too much with people outside of the main activities. However, as the programme has gone on, I have spoken more with my group during times where it is not necessary and even got the confidence to make some friends I will probably stay in touch with after the programme. I have also taken feedback onboard during the programme, learning to make my writing more concise and relevant to a topic.

Skills I have learnt on the programme have made me more successful in applying to jobs; for example, I applied for a graduate scheme and was accepted through to the assessment centre, whereas I wasn’t even getting as far as interviews before. The mock interviews gave me the confidence in how to answer questions and prepared me for what to expect.

This course has given me the confidence to apply for new things, and I’ve learnt working with others is better than I thought it would be.
