Providing support for young people and their families

The YG Way

The YG Way was created in response to feedback from young people and youth workers. It’s our approach to making sure that, no matter which service a young person uses at Young Gloucestershire, they can expect the same high standards and supportive experience.

At its heart, the YG Way is about combining youth work and counselling theory with practical, tested methods to help young people achieve positive outcomes. It also provides a framework for our staff to be creative, responsive, and consistent in their work.

What the YG Way Offers

Evidence-based approaches: Our methods are rooted in youth work and counselling theory, ensuring every intervention is known to work and delivers positive results.

Consistency across services: Young people experience the same high standards, clear processes, and consistent levels of support, no matter which team they work with.

Youth-led action plans: Young people are at the center of planning their own support, helping them build confidence, skills, and resilience.

Flexible staff framework: Our staff can respond creatively to each young person while still following a clear structure.

Outcome measurement: We track progress and benchmark our services to ensure continuous improvement.

Language that cares: Everything we say and write reflects empathy, respect, and understanding, helping young people feel heard and supported.

Embedding the YG Way

All new staff at Young Gloucestershire complete a two-week induction, which includes:

Understanding youth work principles

Learning how to use language that cares

Managing diaries, caseloads, and resources

Running action planning sessions with young people

Checking in on wait lists and missed appointments

Developing effective sessions and positive endings

Using measurement tools to track progress

This practical training ensures every member of our team understands not only how to carry out their role but also why we do things the YG Way. It’s about giving young people the support, skills, and resilience they need to tackle life’s challenges while empowering our staff to provide the best possible care.
